Future Charging Solutions: Making green energy easier
Currently electric vehicles require the use of an electric cable and a charge point to recharge. Wireless technology is now available to enable an electric vehicle to park over a charging pad and recharge wirelessly. This is similar to the technology used to wirelessly recharge mobile phones. Our Leeds-based wireless car charging business serves the whole of the UK in installing this technology, when it becomes available.
Wireless charging works by transferring energy between a pad on the ground, and a compatible receiver on the underfloor of an electric vehicle. The system uses a magnetic occurrence called resonant inductive coupling. It creates a magnetic field, which is perfectly safe, but also enables efficient charging at decent speeds. Where plug in chargers may be faster, wireless charging is far more convenient, and there is scope to have these charging points on taxi ranks, bus stops, in car parks, and even on motorway lanes, so that vehicles may charge as they are in motion. Most studies have shown that wireless charging is 90-95% as efficient as plug-in charging, but its potential convenience and application outweighs these small losses considerably.
Soon this technology will be accessible to a private buyer, allowing them to install a charging pad in their garage or driveway, and charge their electric vehicle overnight without the need for a lead.
Nottingham City Council recently commenced a trial of wireless car charging for its taxis, installing five pads outside the railway station, to be shared among ten compatible taxis.
Busses are expected to be one of the leading lights in adopting electric power, and wireless charging for this will have a wide range of applications, including bus stops and stations.
A car park for electric vehicles, with wireless charging facilities will have much more space than one with traditional plug-in leads. These locations will be highly convenient for shoppers, and people on day trips to remote locations.
